It connects Serbia with Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and, further south, Greece.<br \/>\nWith the support of the European Union (EU), in this phase, modernisation, reconstruction and extension of the railway connecting Belgrade and Ni\u0161 with a total length of 230 km will be done. It is one of the national priorities for the future development of the railway transport system of the Republic of Serbia. Built as a single-track railway, it was put into traffic in 1884.<br \/>\nModernisation of railway Belgrade-Ni\u0161 will contribute to the progressive integration of the national network into the European Union transport market through improvements and developments of the railway infrastructure along the trans-European transport network on the basis of the relevant acquis and EU Technical Specification of Interoperability and to open new opportunities for integrated and sustainable economic and social growth of the South East European region.<br \/>\nThe project contributes to the EU policies, in particular the EU Green Agenda, and enhances Serbia&#8217;s connectivity, common regional market (CRM), and regional integration with the EU. It is in line with the priorities of the Transport Community, as reiterated in the Western Balkan Rail Summit in Belgrade on 13 September 2021: \u201cThe future is on Tracks\u201d and Serbia&#8217;s national infrastructure development priorities.<br \/>\nModernisation of the railway Belgrade-Ni\u0161 should contribute to the promotion of environmentally friendly means of transport, accelerating the shift to sustainable mobility and green economy transition and implementation of the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans and the new Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.<\/p>\n class=\"media-text-section--text-holder\">\r\n                                        <h2>What modernisation of the railway Belgrade-Ni\u0161 will enable?<\/h2>\n<p>The modernisation and reconstruction of the Belgrade-Nis railway will enable the creation of a modern two-track railway for mixed (passenger and freight) traffic along the entire length of the railway, and trains will run at a speed of up to 200 km\/h.<br \/>\nA modernised railway will provide a high level of safety, capacity, and comfort in the transportation of passengers and goods. It will contribute to railways&#8217; competitiveness in relation to other modes of transport, enable rational traffic redistribution, and increase the level of environmental protection in Corridor                         <div class=\"media-text-section--text-holder\">\r\n                                        <h2>Funding<\/h2>\n<p>An estimated value of the works on the modernisation of the Belgrade-Nis railway is \u20ac2.775 billion.
