About The Project

Modernisation of the railway Belgrade – Niš

The Belgrade-Niš railway is an integral part of the European railway network (Corridor X) and is of the greatest importance for the domestic and international traffic in the Republic of Serbia.
In Serbia, Railway Corridor X includes 872 km of double-track railway. It connects Serbia with Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and, further south, Greece.
With the support of the European Union (EU), in this phase, modernisation, reconstruction and extension of the railway connecting Belgrade and Niš with a total length of 230 km will be done. It is one of the national priorities for the future development of the railway transport system of the Republic of Serbia. The EU is also actively supporting the preparation and implementation of the modernisation of other sections of Corridor X and other important railway routes.
The project will enable a faster and safer flow of passengers, transport, goods, and services through the Republic of Serbia and enhance its integration into the EU railway networks.
Here, you can find all the important information about the modernisation of Railway Corridor X in Serbia and the public procurement funded by EU funds related to the Belgrade—Niš Section.

Railway Belgrade – Niš

The Belgrade-Niš railway is a central part of the Serbian railway network and a key route for connecting Western Europe with the Western Balkans, Greece and Turkey.
The Belgrade-Niš railway represents one of the most important transport corridors and is essential for the development of a sustainable transport system in the country. Built as a single-track railway, it was put into traffic in 1884.
Modernisation of railway Belgrade-Niš will contribute to the progressive integration of the national network into the European Union transport market through improvements and developments of the railway infrastructure along the trans-European transport network on the basis of the relevant acquis and EU Technical Specification of Interoperability and to open new opportunities for integrated and sustainable economic and social growth of the South East European region.
The project contributes to the EU policies, in particular the EU Green Agenda, and enhances Serbia’s connectivity, common regional market (CRM), and regional integration with the EU. It is in line with the priorities of the Transport Community, as reiterated in the Western Balkan Rail Summit in Belgrade on 13 September 2021: “The future is on Tracks” and Serbia’s national infrastructure development priorities.
Modernisation of the railway Belgrade-Niš should contribute to the promotion of environmentally friendly means of transport, accelerating the shift to sustainable mobility and green economy transition and implementation of the Economic and Investment Plan for the Western Balkans and the new Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.

A modernised railway will provide a high level of safety, capacity, and comfort in the transportation of passengers and goods. It will contribute to railways’ competitiveness in relation to other modes of transport, enable rational traffic redistribution, and increase the level of environmental protection in Corridor X.
